Relora and the herbs that make it up

Introduction

relaxation - relora

Relora is a blend of two traditional herbs that help with mood disorders. It contains Magnolia Officinalis and Phellodendron Amurense, which are bark extracts. When combined, these traditional herbs have the ability to elevate mood and manage anxiety among other uses. Relora is believed to act through enhancing healthy levels of cortisol hormone in the blood. Cortisol hormone has several uses which include regulation of stress response, reducing inflammation, control blood glucose levels, regulate metabolism, wound healing, electrolyte balance, enhances memory function and also has an effect on the salt and water balance in the body, therefore aiding in blood pressure control. It is therefore essential to have a healthy balance of cortisol in the body.

Components of Relora

Magnolia Officinalis

This is the magnolia bark, also referred to as Houpu Magnolia. It is mainly found in the China mountains and is very aromatic. The Chinese have used it for many years as traditional medicine. Magnolia bark contains large amounts of polyphenols magnolol and honokiol, which are peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma agonists. They also have the ability to modulate GAMA expression which allows them to play a significant role in neurotransmission. Magnolol has nootropic effects since it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. This is why the herb is widely used for mood modulation and relieving stress. Moreover, magnolia officinalis also contains alkaloids and glycosides among other bioactive compounds.

Phellodendron Amurense

This is also referred to as Amur Cork Tree or Shikerebe-Ni. It is mainly found in East Asian nations such as Japan, Korea, and China and has been used for generations as traditional herbal medicine. It is especially used to treat inflammation and improve bone and liver health. The herb contains several bioactive compounds including Palmatine, Limonoids, Jatrorrhizine, and Berberine. Berberine is speculated to play a role in improving cardiovascular health and supporting inflammatory response. The herb also has compounds with anti-oxidant properties which they get after activation of Glutathione S-Transferase.  In addition, Phellodendron Amurense has the ability to target beta 2 adrenoreceptor agonists, which provides it with fat burning abilities.

Uses of Relora

Alleviating Stress and Anxiety

Research has proven that Relora is effective in causing relaxation, reducing irritability, restlessness and inducing muscle relaxation. A study at the University of Mississippi discovered that Relora enhances feelings of wellbeing and helped in stress-related mood swings and difficulty concentrating. This effect is attributed to the magnolia bark whose effect on neuron activity through GABA modulation leads to positive effects on stress and anxiety. Another study on athletes found that Relora had anti-stress benefits on athletes that were recovering from training-induced stress or stress caused by the emotional and psychological demands of competition. Relora also has possible benefits in preventing overtraining syndrome and boosting post-exercise recovery.

Sedation

Relora has also been found to have sedative effects due to the presence of magnolia bark whose compounds enhance REM and non-REM sleep. A study done on mice discovered that the magnolol and honokiol in magnolia increased the number of GABA receptors and promoted the production of Acetylcholine. This effect is likely to lead to neuroprotective effects and sleep enhancement.

Weight Loss

There is increasing evidence from clinical studies proving that Relora aids in weight loss especially in patients who stress eat. Relora decreases the levels of Cortisol in blood, which reduces stress and subsequently the urge to stress-eat. A study on Relora’s effect on weight loss found that the herb increased levels of DHEA and reduced levels of Cortisol in blood, which reduced the urge to snack substantially. In addition, adding Relora to one’s diet when undergoing an exercise program can ease weight loss. Studies have also found that adding either magnolol or honokiol to one’s diet can increase metabolic rate, therefore enhancing weight loss.

Insomnia

Relora’s ability to cause relaxation and ease anxiety is also a factor in promoting sleep. Magnolia in Relora increases GABA activity, which enhances sleep and treats insomnia. People suffering from insomnia and other sleep disorders usually have a low GABA activity, which explains magnolia’s ability to cure insomnia. Furthermore, bioactive compounds in Relora have been seen to cause the increased length of REM and non-REM sleep thus reducing the time one takes to fall asleep. Magnolia also has the ability to lower the production of adrenaline, which makes it easier for people suffering from anxiety and stress to sleep.

Improving cognitive performance

Enough and healthy sleep is vital for the brain. Relora’s ability to enhance sleep is therefore connected to improved cognition. The herb’s activity on GABA in combination with its anti-oxidant properties also enhance natural protection of the brain. Studies on mice have revealed that Relora may have the ability to reduce the death of brain cells brought about by Alzheimer’s disease. Other studies have found that the herb also has the ability to enhance memory processing and improve learning due to its ability to maintaining optimal levels of acetylcholine. People diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease present with low acetylcholine levels. A study using mice on the effects of Magnolia on Alzheimer’s discovered that the bark extract induced memory rebounds and caused reduced brain plaque in Alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer prevention

Relora contains bioactive compounds, specifically costunolide, which is known for its cancer-fighting abilities. Research into Costunolide from the magnolia bark reveals that it prompts the death of cancer cells in ovarian cancer, breast cancer and in leukemia. A study conducted at John’s Hopkins University revealed that magnolia bark contains a compound that reduces the growth of cancer cells in breast cancer.

Treating pain and inflammation

Phellodendron Amurense extracts have been used for centuries as painkillers. Joint pain, muscle pain, menstrual cramps, and headaches can be relieved by Magnolia bark. Phellodendron Amurense is also effective in treating urinary tract infections, eye infections, and diarrhea. A study conducted on mice revealed that magnolia bark extract is effective in reducing pain from inflammation.

Enhancing digestion

Digestive ailments such as bloat, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and diarrhea have been traditionally treated using Magnolia bark and Cork tree extracts. Magnolia can also be used together with ginger to naturally treat digestive problems.

Promoting bone and dental health

Clinical studies performed on rats revealed that magnolol and honokiol found in magnolia bark suppress the expression of RANKL, thus supporting bone health. They also enhance the immune system’s response to bacterial infection in the mouth, therefore promoting dental health.

Consumption and Dosage of Relora

There is no specific recommended universal dosage of Relora. Different dosages have been used in different studies which exhibited different results. Physicians recommend users to start with low doses and gradually increase. Most studies recommend a dosage of 750 mg of Relora daily. Usually, the formulation of Relora is a 250 mg capsule, and should, therefore, be taken three times a day. However, since different pharmaceutical companies manufacture Relora, it is important to note the amount of Relora in every capsule.
